Sociology is a social science that focuses on society, human social behavior, the pattern of social relationships, social interactions, and aspects of culture associated with everyday life.
It uses various methods of empirical investigations and critical analysis to develop a body of knowledge about social order and the process of social change. The subject matter can range from micro-level to macro-level analysis. The micro-level analysis is related to individual interaction and agency, and Macro-level analysis is related to systems of social structure. Sociology also focuses on social stratifications: Varnas, Caste, class systems, and social mobilities: religion, secularization, law, sexuality, gender, deviant behaviors.
Sociology covered and gradually expanded to other subjects and disciplines such as health, medicine, economy, and a study of scientific knowledge. It has three major theoretical perspectives functional, conflict, and symbolic interactionism.
The Department of Sociology of Udai Pratap College was established in 1964 at the Undergraduate level and the Post Graduate Course began in 1998. Design of the courses and curricula for UG and PG are most relevant. It consists of conceptual, theoretical, and empirical approaches. PG course is most specialized as it contains ethnographic studies, sociology of development, rural & urban sociology, sociology of India: a study focused in Indological way, as well as this course, provide and develop the vision of students towards research methodologies and statistical analysis, knowledge of fieldwork, and also develop research orientations like term paper book review and preparing the research proposal. The Department also offers Ph.D. programs in different areas of Sociology. Alumni of the department are serving in the field of sociology at various prestigious institutions and in other fields also.
