About
the Department
The department
of Agricultural Economics came into existence in 1963 when the Agricultural
Faculty was started in the college. Thepost-graduate started in the department
in 1972 and enrolment of Ph.D. student in 1974 when the college was affiliated
with the Gorakhpur University. After getting the Autonomous status by the
college in 1990 – 91, the college has started to have its own R.D.C.
consequently the department has started to enrolled the student in the Ph.D.
degree programme in 2001 as the college was affiliated with Veer Bahadur Singh
Purvanchal University, Jaunpur. The system of teaching in the faculty before
1999 was traditional in under-graduate and post-graduate programme. The
semester system was introduced in under-graduate programme as per
recommendations of the 3rd Dean’s committee constituted by I.C.A.R.,
New Delhi in 1999 and accordingly the courses of agriculturaleconomics were
introduced in the B.Sc.(Ag.) programme. The department offered six courses with
17 credits in the B.Sc. (Ag.) programme including RAWE. The agriculture faculty
has decided to introduce the semester system in the post-graduate programme in
2002 and offering different 13 courses with total of 60 credits in agricultural
economics. Now the faculty has switch-over to adopt the courses of 5th
Dean’s committee in the under-graduate programme from 2019.
The
department has 7 faculty members (5 of them are Ph.D.) and 15 seats in M.Sc.
(Ag.) programme. The faculty members of the department are taking classes of
different courses of Agricultural Economics covering the 425 under-graduate
students along with the post graduate classes.So far the department has
produced 29 Ph.D. and credit to published 78 research
papers in the journal of repute. The one major research project funded by
Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi entitled “economics of dairy
enterprise in the milkshed area of Varanasi milk plant with special reference
to small and marginal farmers” and another major research project funded by
U.P. Council of Agricultural research, Lucknow entitled “ To assess the present
status of different types of loan to the farmers and their repayment
performance of easternUttar Pradesh” were completed in the department besides4
minor projects have also been completed.The faculty members have participated
in many national and international seminars, conferences, workshop, refresher
and orientation etc. The faculty members also perform their duties in different
assignment as a Hostel Warden, Programme Officer in N.S.S., Proctor, Deputy
Controller Research, Incharge library, D.S.W., InchargePlacement cell and Deputy
Controller Examination etc. assigned by the college administration time to time
and recipients of many awards and recognitions. The faculties are the life
member of the professional bodies. Dr. S.K. Singh have attended international
conferences in abroad like Australia, Italy, China, Bangkok, Manila and
Dr.M.K.Singh inBrunaee and presented their papers. Five books were published by
the faculties on agricultural economics for under-graduate students.
The
department has credit to organize successfully a symposium entitled “Economic
backwardness of Eastern U.P. : Problems and strategies of development” held on
14 & 15 October, 1995 which was inaugurated by former Prime Minister late
Sri Chandra Sekharjee sponsored by Planning Commission of India and its
proceeding was published on 30.09.2000. Another national conference on “Sustainable
management of environment for livelihoods security through skill development
for smart agriculture” was organised by Dr.M.K.Singh, Associate Professor in
Agricultural Economics on dated November 28-29, 2016 and proceeding was
published.
The
old boys of the department were/are working in the different agriculturaluniversities
in various capacities. Some of them have been Deans, head of Department and
offering their services in the teaching, research, extension and administration.
Many more alumni are working in private companies in the field of fertilizer,
pesticide, poultry and other sectors of the agriculture in the country and
abroad as well.
